Although the words don’t mean much, when you try to play it backwards, it becomes something else. Some say the title refers to an actual hotel in San Francisco which was purchased by occultist Anton LaVey who later converted it into the Church of Satan. The site also contains backmasked work from such "obvious" bands like Metallica, plus some unexpected performers like Madonna and Michael Jackson.Ever since it was released, there were so many rumors about the supposed actual meaning of the song. In the local front the E-heads were accused of writing a song if played backwards ranted gross disrespect to Jesus Christ. Heck the Eagles weren't the only one pinned with this accusation, even the Beatles were accused of circulating demonic songs. The first theory's more plausable than the second. For those who doesnt know who Anton LeVay is, he published the Satanic Bible in 1966 and set up what was known as the Church of Satan(also dubbed as hotel california) in San francisco California.Interestingly, one of the High Priest was someone named Marilyn Manson. In one of the windows you can see the face of Anton LeVay.
In the background near the top you can see 3 arch windows. If you look at the original LP cover, it shows a room with some kind of a party going on.
The theory with satanism is probably the more popular of the two since not only that the lyrics to "Hotel California" contain satanic overtones but the original vinyl LP cover shows a picture of Anton LeVay. In addition to that the real "Hotel California" as referred to by californians, is a mental instituion(state hospital) that mainly caters to patients with irreversible mental disorders caused by mind altering substances.
Also, the phrase "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" was referred to in a published article by Glen Frey while talking about cocaine addiction. The first one is that it's about drugs since the word "colitas" means "little buds" if translated from Spanish. The Eagles is one of my favorite bands of all time and I always hear two different theories about the meaning to the song "Hotel California".
